The Senior Beacon was founded in February 1982 by Jim Grasso, a local journalist and entrepreneur who recognized something others had not yet fully seen — the future of the Baby Boom generation.

At the time, Jim was balancing careers in real estate and newspaper publishing, writing and selling advertising for the now-defunct Sun newspaper in Colorado Springs. But he understood that the largest generation in American history would one day become seniors — and would need a trusted source of news, community connection, and local resources tailored specifically to them.

With that vision, the Senior Beacon was born.

What began as a modest publication steadily grew into a respected monthly newspaper serving Southern Colorado. Over the years, the Beacon expanded to as many as 40 pages per issue and reached a circulation of approximately 20,000 copies distributed across three cities.

Today, the Senior Beacon continues its mission of delivering meaningful stories, local news, and helpful resources to the senior community. Jim, now semi-retired, remains actively involved in the publication he built from the ground up — a testament to his enduring commitment to the readers and communities it serves.
